A police officer was allegedly assaulted by a man who was detained after leaving the scene of a crash at Manly.
Just after 2.30pm Monday afternoon (17 August), NSW Police responded to a report of a single vehicle collision into parked vehicles at Pittwater Road, Manly, near Denison Street.
Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command attended the scene and were told a blue 2013 Mazda 3 hatchback had crossed from the southbound lane to the opposite side of the road, crashing into parked vehicles.

The Mazda hit a Ford Ranger utility that was then pushed back into a Range Rover that was also parked on the northbound side of Pittwater Road. Police were told the male driver of the Mazda got out of his vehicle and left the scene.
With a description of the driver and a direction he had left the scene, police stopped a 71-year-old man shortly afterwards at Kangaroo Lane, Manly. According to reports from the scene, the man allegedly attempted to resist arrest and allegedly assaulted police as he was detained.

The 71-year-old man was taken to Manly Police Station and subsequently charged with:
- Negligent driving, under Section 117(1)(c) of the Road Transport Act, which carries a penalty of up to $1,100 and three demerit points
- Assaulting a police officer in the execution of their duty without actual bodily harm, under Section 60(1) of the Crimes Act, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment
- Resisting a police officer in the execution of their duty, under Section 60(1AA) of the Crimes Act, which carries a penalty of up to 12 months’ imprisonment and a fine of up to $2,200
