Police were told a disagreement in the restaurant had led to an altercation with another man unknown to the 32-year-old that escalated and spilled outside.

The alleged assailant was not at the scene when police arrived, and a search of the area was undertaken based on a description given to officers.

An exclusion zone was established using crime scene tape and firefighters from Dee Why Station were called to hose down blood on the footpath.
