A man whose bail was revoked at Manly Local Court was taken down after he fled the courthouse.
Around 3.30pm yesterday afternoon (Thursday, 23 July), 40-year-old Jay Kevin Schneider from Warriewood was appearing before Manly Local Court after police sought an application for him to be remanded in custody following an alleged domestic violence-related assault at Cromer on Monday (20 July).
The judge agreed with police, finding Mr Schneider posed a risk to his alleged victim and the community. Upon hearing his bail would be revoked and he would be remanded in custody, Mr Schneider allegedly ran from the courtroom and onto Belgrave Street, pursued by police and Sherrif’s officers from the court.

Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command from Manly Police Station directly adjacent to the courthouse also gave chase, and Mr Schneider was tackled to the ground and apprehended opposite the courthouse at Gilbert Park.
News Ltd journalist Jim O’Rourke was at the courthouse reporting for The Manly Daily, when he witnessed the escape and captured the man’s arrest on video, which is exclusively available in his coverage of the event.

The video shows a number of officers attempting to apprehend Mr Schneider, who continues to struggle throughout. NSW Police reported that Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray was used in the arrest. He was handcuffed and marched back across Belgrave Street and directly into the holding cells at Manly Police Station.
There, 40-year-old Jay Kevin Schneider was charged with:
- One count of attempting to escape lawful custody, under Section 310D of the Crimes Act 1900, which carries a maximum penalty of up to ten years’ imprisonment
- One count of resisting a law enforcement officer in the execution of their duty, under Section 60A(1AA) of the NSW Crimes Act. The penalty for this offence is a fine of up to $2,200 and up to 12 months’ imprisonment.
