Car crashes into chicken shop

A car has mounted the kerb and gone into a shopfront at Allambie Heights, hitting children seated outside.

Just after 3.00pm this afternoon (Sunday, 28 June), emergency services responded to multiple Triple Zero (000) calls reporting a car had mounted the kerb and gone into the front of the ‘Wicked Chicken’ takeaway shop at Allambie Road, Allambie Heights.

The driver of the white 2022 BMW 330i station wagon, a man in his 40s, appears to have hit the accelerator instead of the brake, mounting the kerb and driving through tables and chairs on the footpath outside the shop before crashing into the food counter.

It is understood that three children were seated and eating at one of the tables, when the car lunged forward from a parking bay and onto the footpath.

As they scattered and food went flying, an 11-year-old boy had his left leg run over by one of the vehicle’s wheels, and shocked bystanders rushed to assist.

Three units from Northern Beaches Police Area Command responded to the scene, along with Fire and Rescue NSW Forestville and Narrabeen Stations.

Three NSW Ambulance crews were tasked to respond, including Intensive Care Paramedics from Balgowlah Ambulance Station and NSW Ambulance Supervisor Shaun Kelly.

Paramedics assessed the injured 11-year-old, who was complaining of pain to both his legs and right arm.

He was treated for bruising and abrasions to his left leg, and taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick in a stable condition just after 3.45pm.

The other two children were assessed by paramedics but did not need to be taken to hospital.

Firefighters established an exclusion zone around the shop, securing the vehicle and assessing damage to the structure of the building.

They found no structural damage to the building, but the car had shunted the front counter back into the shop.

Power to the circuit connected to the shop’s counter was turned off by firefighters as a precaution until the owners could have an electrician conduct a safety check.
