A North Manly man has been charged with attempted murder after handing himself in to Dee Why Police Station.

Around 12.30pm yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, 08 May), emergency services were called to O’Riordan Street, Alexandria, following reports of an alleged stabbing. Officers attached to South Sydney Police Area Command were told a man had allegedly stabbed a 39-year-old woman in an underground car park of a gym.

The injured woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for lacerations to her head, neck and back, before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A crime scene was established by police officers and detectives commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Suspicions focused on a man known to the woman, who had been under an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO), and prohibited from contacting or approaching her. Around 7.50am this morning (Thursday, 09 May), the 45-year-old man from North Manly was arrested after presenting himself to Dee Why Police Station.

He was then taken to Manly Police Station where an arrest warrant was executed, and he was charged with cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder (DV) and contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (domestic).

He has been refused bail to appear before Manly Local Court tomorrow (Friday, 10 May 2024).
