Firefighters worked quickly to put out a fire at a factory at Brookvale this afternoon.

Just before 5.00pm this afternoon (Thursday, 04 April), emergency services responded to reports of smoke coming from a factory at Orchard Road, Brookvale. Multiple Triple Zero (000) calls were received from people in neighbouring businesses and nearby residences concerned at a plume of smoke visible above the Brookvale industrial area.

With recent factory fires at Brookvale resulting in intense fires, seven Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews responded to Advanced Sandblasting and Coatings at Orchard Road, including an Inspector and over 20 firefighters from Manly, Dee Why, Mosman, Forestville and Narrabeen Stations.

On arrival, they found an active fire inside the flue of an exhaust extraction system. With NSW Police arriving on scene, they first established that all employees had been safely evacuated from the building. After some initial confusion, all people were accounted for.

Firefighters set a perimeter to prevent any spread of fire to neighbouring businesses and turned off power to the building, before firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the factory with two hose lines. They located the source of the smoke in the exhaust system and quickly extinguished it.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were on scene to assess anyone who may have been injured, but none of the employees or firefighters were harmed in the fire and nobody required further treatment in hospital as a result of smoke inhalation.

The fire appears to have been contained to the exhaust system, fortunately minimising the damage to the factory, but the loss of the exhaust system is likely to impact operations until repaired.

The cause of the fire is not being considered suspicious. The premises were handed back to the owner and firefighters departed just after 6.30pm.
