A driver has been rescued from a car that crashed down a steep driveway at Palm Beach.

Shortly after 2.00pm Saturday afternoon (23 March), emergency services responded to a report of a car that had lost traction and tumbled down a steep driveway at Barrenjoey Road, Palm Beach.

A bystander said they heard loud crashing sounds, and when they looked up, saw the late-model silver Honda HR-V rolling over sideways down the hill.

Damage to the driver side door prevented it from opening, but they rushed to assist and helped the badly shaken man out of the passenger side of the vehicle.

NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and firefighters from Avalon and Narrabeen Stations rushed to the scene.

Paramedics assessed the man, believed to be in his 80s, who appeared to be uninjured, but was deeply shaken by the incident. He was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital in a stable condition shortly before 2.45pm. Fortunately, he was the sole occupant of the vehicle and no other injuries were reported.

The elderly man’s car had become stuck in a precarious position on the driveway, and the southbound lane of Barrenjoey Road had been closed, with officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command setting up a contra flow.

Firefighters stabilised the vehicle, but with a tow truck estimated to be an hour away and traffic heavily impacted, specialist rescue firefighters from Narrabeen Station devised a plan to remove the car from the embankment.

They set up a Tirfor winch system and gradually swung the back end of the vehicle up the driveway. Once all four wheels were back on the ground, a firefighter climbed into the vehicle and placed a safety barrier over the car’s airbag which had not deployed in the crash, to prevent accidental inflating.

They then used the car key, which had been left with them, to start the vehicle and slowly move it to the bottom of the driveway, where it was collected by a tow truck around 3.45pm.
