A man is in custody after an alleged carjacking attempt and assault on a police officer.
Just after 8.00am this morning (Monday, 12 February), a 29-year-old man with a dog was allegedly seen arguing with the driver of a truck that was stopped at the intersection of Warringah Road, Frenchs Forest, and the Wakehurst Parkway.
According to a witness, the man was allegedly aggressive and appeared to be intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. As the truck drove off from the lights the man became agitated, approaching a silver Honda that had been waiting behind the truck at the lights.
The man allegedly began yelling at the driver of the Honda, a woman who had a child with her in the vehicle, to get out of the car. The woman locked the doors, at which point the man allegedly jumped onto the bonnet of the vehicle and began smashing the windscreen.
With Frenchs Forest Police Station only a few hundred metres away, and multiple callers frantically ringing Triple Zero (000) to report the frenzied attack, officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command arrived on scene within minutes.
The man then turned his attention to police, allegedly jumping onto an arriving police vehicle and damaging the bonnet, before assaulting a police officer as they placed the man under arrest.
The man was subdued and placed into a NSW Ambulance, which took him to Royal North Shore Hospital under police escort. It is understood he will undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing and a psychiatric evaluation.
The police officer was taken to nearby Northern Beaches Hospital for treatment of facial injuries.
A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed the incident and said inquiries are ongoing. Anyone with dashcam footage or other information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
