A man has been arrested after a crash at Mona Vale for alleged drink driving.

Just before 5.30pm last night (Monday, 22 May), NSW Police were called to a report of a single vehicle collision with a parked car at Maxwell Street, Mona Vale, near Katrina Avenue.

A Silver VW SUV driven by a 43-year-old man had collided with an unoccupied parked vehicle, a blue Lexus RX30 SUV. The force of the impact was sufficient to move the parked vehicle around 5m, off the road and onto the grass verge (main image).

A neighbour at the scene said they ran outside, to see the VW continuing to drive down Maxwell Street, and took off in pursuit. The vehicle, which had a badly damaged front passenger side wheel, turned into Parkland Road, where it stopped, around 150m from the scene of the collision (image above).

According to the neighbour, the male driver appeared intoxicated and a female bystander approached the vehicle and took the keys from the ignition.

Bystanders said police arrived on scene quickly, with three units from Northern Beaches Police Area Command observed at the incident scene. With the damaged VW blocking the westbound lane of Parkland Road, a contra flow was established to permit traffic to pass (image below).

A NSW Police spokesperson said the man was subjected to a roadside breath test, which allegedly returned a positive result, and he was placed under arrest.

At this point, the man’s father arrived on scene demanding to know if his son was under arrest and where he was being taken. Police officers informed the man’s father he was being taken to Mona Vale Police Station. The father was then left to organise a tow truck to remove the vehicle from the middle of Parkland Road, where it was also blocking a residential driveway.

The NSW Police spokesperson said at Mona Vale Police Station the driver was subjected to further breath analysis, which allegedly returned a result of 0.217. The 43-year-old man’s Driver Licence was suspended and he was issued with a Court Attendance Notice for drive with high range Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol (PCA).

He is due to appear at Manly Local Court on Wednesday, 05 July 2023.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
