A man is in police custody after allegedly attempting to rob a Manly service station.

Just after 6.00am this morning (Saturday, 29 April), officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command were called to a report of a man allegedly armed with a knife at a service station at Pittwater Road, Manly, near Steinton Street.

When police arrived on scene, the man was inside the shop allegedly armed with a knife. A stand-off ensued, with police speaking to the armed 35-year-old man and negotiating for him to give himself up.

After 45 minutes of negotiation, the man agreed to surrender peacefully to police, and they entered the store and the man was arrested without incident.

It is believed police harboured concerns for the man’s mental well-being, and he was taken in police custody to Northern Beaches Hospital for assessment.

A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed a crime scene was established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
