A man was arrested and refused bail after allegedly biting a police officer at Manly.

Around 9.30am yesterday morning (Saturday, 14 January), officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command responded to reports of stealing from a store at Sydney Road, Manly.

A 31-year-old man from Wollongong is alleged to have entered a store, picked up a lighter and lit the flame to intimidate a staff member before stealing a nitrous gas cylinder.

A man matching the same description was apprehended and arrested near the store a short time later. In the process of taking the man into custody, NSW Police allege that he bit and assaulted a male constable.

The constable was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were described by a police spokesperson as minor.

The 31-year-old man was taken to Manly Police Station, where he was charged with:

  • assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm
  • larceny
  • attempt stalk/intimidate intend fear of harm (personal)
  • hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty
  • breach of bail

The man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Sunday, 15 January).
