A young driver has had a lucky escape when their car flipped at Frenchs Forest.
Just after 9.30pm last night (Friday, 13 May) emergency services were called to a report of a vehicle on its roof and possibly catching fire at Grace Avenue, Frenchs Forest.
The incident occurred at Grace Avenue, between Russell Avenue and Sorlie Road, close to Forestway Shopping Centre. Emergency services were quickly on scene with the incident within 1km of Northern Beaches Hospital, Frenchs Forest Police Station and Forestville Fire Station.
Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command arrived first, followed by firefighters from Forestville Station and NSW Ambulance paramedics who had been at the hospital. They found a silver Holden Astra on its roof but no sign of fire. The driver, a male in his late teens and sole occupant, had managed to climb out of the overturned vehicle.
Nearby residents had come out of their homes following the sound of the collision, which had occurred with a parked car, causing the young man’s vehicle to flip over. The stationary dark blue sedan was unoccupied at the time of impact.
Although airbags in the vehicle had deployed, the young man sustained facial and head injuries. He was assessed at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, including an Inspector who also attended the incident. After initial treatment, he was transported by road to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
One resident at the scene told the Northern Beaches Advocate they had previously been run into by a young driver, who had sped through the roundabout at Russell Avenue and been unable to stop before colliding with their vehicle, which was waiting for a turning driver.
A similar incident occurred at Grace Avenue last year (28 June, 2021) when a driver was critically injured after their vehicle hit a parked car and rolled several times before it hit a tree.
The vehicle was recovered by a tow truck, allowing firefighters to clear fluid and debris from the roadway before it could be reopened shortly after 10.30pm.
The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
