The restoration of cottages at Currawong Beach has won a national building design award.
The Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA) National Design Awards for 2021 has named the Currawong Cottages Refurbishment Project as the winner in the Heritage Buildings / Adaptive Reuse category.
The restoration work is being undertaken by Northern Beaches Council with almost $3m in funding from the NSW Government since 2011. The most recent injection of $1.5m will enable Council to complete the project.
The BDAA National Design Award was presented to Council for the restoration of three cabins, Blue Tongue, Kookaburra and Goanna, along with the Games Room Building.
Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said the award recognised the approach Council was taking to preserve the heritage aspects of the site.
“What a great achievement! Aside from being part of the pool of elite, talented and distinguished winners, Currawong is a must-do activity to tick off your bucket list.
“Council worked closely with Heritage Consultants and NSW Heritage to ensure the restorations preserved the cabins’ rich history while enhancing guest comfort.
“The result is beautiful, sustainable, highly functional cabins which enhance and perpetuate the local environment for all our community to enjoy for years to come,” said Mayor Regan.
The cabins have been restored in line with heritage requirements to retain their simplicity but some original features such as outdoor toilets have been modernised to improve guest amenity and expectations.
Updated features also include renovated bathrooms and kitchens, sweeping timber decks and energy-efficient features for guests to relax and enjoy the natural environment.
The renovation works for the next stage of the project is expected to commence in April 2022 and be completed by December 2022.
Currawong was declared a State Park in 2015 and the site is under the management of Northern Beaches Council in conjunction with the Friends of Currawong, Pittwater Environmental Foundation, Currawong State Park Advisory Committee and the NSW Government.
Accommodation at Currawong Beach is available in the various cabins, Lodge, Caretaker’s Cottage and the heritage listed Midholme homestead. The facilities are reserved for paying guests, however day trips to Currawong Beach are welcomed, with a publicly accessible toilet and picnic area available.
