A man died today spearfishing off Grotto Point.
At 2.15pm today (Sunday, 25 July) emergency services were called to Dobroyd Scenic Drive, Balgowlah Heights following a report of an unconscious man in the water near Grotto Point at Dobroyd Head.
The man had apparently been spearfishing near Grotto Point when concerns were raised for his safety in the water by a member of the public. A NSW Maritime vessel was first at the scene, pulling the unconscious man from the water.
CPR was performed on the man as he was brought back to the Marine Rescue NSW Middle Harbour base of operations at The Spit, accompanied by NSW Police Marine Area Command. As they headed to shore, a Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter was dispatched from Bankstown, landing at The Spit around 2.40pm.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man died at the scene. According to NSW Police, he is yet to be formally identified. Officers from Marine Area Command have commenced an investigation into his death and will prepare a report for the information of the coroner.
