A 27-year-old man has broken his leg at Avalon Beach today (Monday, 11 January).

Emergency services were called to reports of an injured man in the water at Avalon Beach around 12.40pm.

The man was with a group of friends at jump rock at North Avalon when he leapt into the water, landing heavily on a submerged rock which was close to the surface due to the low tide.

The man’s friends said he landed very heavily and they initially feared he had suffered a spinal injury, however it became clear as they assisted him in the water that he had suffered a compound fracture in one leg.

Lifeguards responded with a jetski to assist the injured man. He was extricated from the water and taken to North Avalon Beach car park where he was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being transported to Northern Beaches Hospital.

The man’s friends said he was a local tradesman working as a builder, and had been due to return to work tomorrow.
