UPDATED 14/10: For the second time in two weeks, another accident resulting in a car flipping on its roof has occurred in Avalon.

Around 11.00am Monday, 12 October, a vehicle driving north on Barrenjoey Road, Avalon (alongside the Woolworths car park, opposite the Skate Park) lost control and flipped onto its roof, damaging two parked cars.

An 86-year-old male driver of a white Audi sedan was the sole occupant of the vehicle that flipped. It is understood that he was trying to park his car on Barrenjoey Road at the time of the accident, when he swerved to avoid another vehicle causing him to hit the parked cars.

The man’s car and two parked vehicles suffered considerable damage, however it appears that the parked vehicles were unoccupied at the time of impact. According to CareFlight, no other people were injured in the incident.

Suspended upside down by his seatbelt, the elderly driver was unable to get himself out of his vehicle. Witnesses rendered assistance by phoning emergency services. NSW Ambulance paramedics quickly arrived at the scene and provided initial treatment.

CareFlight’s Rapid Response Helicopter, which was requested by NSW Ambulance shortly after 11.00am, was in the air within four minutes and with the patient twenty-five minutes later. The helicopter landed nearby at Dunbar Park.

CareFlight’s specialist doctor and a NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic performed a clinical assessment with the patient in the road ambulance.

The helicopter’s critical care team continued monitoring the man’s condition and providing care in the ambulance as he was taken by road to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.

Witnesses reported that the driver was conscious throughout the ordeal but trapped for some time until he was safely removed from the vehicle by emergency services, who also checked for fuel leaks.

The road was closed by Police while the operation to remove the man from the vehicle was underway, causing significant traffic disruptions in the area.

Northern Beaches Advocate recently reported a similar road accident in Avalon when a black utility vehicle flipped onto its roof in a single vehicle crash at Old Barrenjoey Road, near the intersection with Barrenjoey Road and Plateau Road around 7.15am Tuesday, 29 September.

In that incident, although the driver was able to get themselves out of the upturned vehicle, Fire and Rescue NSW crews from nearby Avalon Fire Station along with NSW Police attended the accident scene until a tow truck was able to remove the vehicle.
