Temporary road closures have been announced for the Streets as Shared Spaces program.
Northern Beaches Council received funding from the State Government to conduct temporary road closures for community engagement projects.
Chair of council’s Transport & Travel Strategic Reference Group, Cr Sarah Grattan, said the intention was to allow for enhanced recreation activities such as pop-up cycleways and outdoor dining.
“COVID-19 has presented us with a number of opportunities to trial new initiatives. More people are cycling and there is also a need to support our local eateries with extended outdoor dining opportunities due to the new spacing restrictions,” said Cr Grattan.
The street closures will take place in the following locations:
- Tania Park, Balgowlah Heights
○ 6.00am — 4.00pm Sunday, 11 October
○ 6.00am — 9.30am Sunday, 15 November
○ 6.00am — 9.30am Sunday, 13 December
- The Strand, Dee Why
○ 10.00pm Wednesday, 28 October — 12.00pm Monday, 02 November
- Robertson Road, Newport
○ Friday evening, 13 November — Sunday, 15 November
- Waratah Street, Mona Vale
○ 10.00pm Thursday, 19 November — 10.00am Monday, 23 November
Cr Grattan proposed the closure at Tania Park some months ago following community requests to allow for additional space and safety for pedestrians and bike riders.
“Tania Park will be the first trial and notifications have been sent to the community which has caused some angst for those not previously aware of the proposal.
“Others are excited about having three opportunities for their kids to safely ride bikes for a few hours once a month.
“Timing was chosen not to clash with organised sport. Impacts will be closely assessed before any consideration of making this a more regular event,” said Cr Grattan.
