UPDATED: A bushfire has erupted near the Quarantine Station at North Head.
Speculated to be a possible re-ignition of the backburning from around two weeks ago, strong winds fanned the flames just before 9.00pm.
Visible from Fairlight and Manly, residents heard the sound of sirens and could see visible fire front on the headland.
Several crews from NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire & Rescue NSW have been deployed in the area of the Quarantine Station to protect assets in case the wind changes direction and threatens buildings.
Around 11.00pm it was reported the fire has been contained sufficiently for some of the crews to depart.
Crews remained deployed overnight to surround the blaze and protect the heritage buildings of the Quarantine Station.
Approximately 3.15am the fire was confirmed extinguished and all crews departed.
