Vandalism and antisocial behaviour among young people is the target of an art project being administered by Northern Beaches Council.

Council are seeking experienced artists to respond to an Expression of Interest (EOI) for $15k in funding to create a mural on a large wall at the rear of 20 Bungan Street, Mona Vale (main image).

A high number of graffiti-related incidents occur in the area and the aim of the mural is to engage a group of young people to assist with the installation of the work, creating a sense of belonging and ownership.

Funding for the work is being provided by the Crime Prevention Division of the NSW Department of Communities and Justice in response to antisocial behaviour and damage in public spaces in the Mona Vale and Newport area.

The wall available for the artwork is off Bungan Lane, next to a car park. A tree in front of the wall is stipulated to remain in place and artists responding to the EOI are encouraged to consider incorporating it as a visual element.

Council have offered in-kind support to assist the installation of the work, including a cherry picker to assist with access to the height of the wall.

Responses to the EOI are required by 24 July 2020, with installation stated to commence in August 2020.

Evaluation of the successful response will be based on:

  • Demonstrated understanding of the project
  • Experience in the design, construction and installation of large-scale public murals
  • Experience working with local government and community groups
  • Appropriateness and relevance of the artwork to the project context
  • Strength of artistic vision and integrity of the concept
  • Maintenance and durability
  • Capacity to work within the project timeline and budget

More information is available in the Bungan Lane Mural Project EOI document.

Council has previously supported the installation of mural artworks. A mural installed five years ago on the side of the Modus Operandi Brewing Company at Mona Vale remains undamaged by vandalism (image below).
